Mange tv-seere tror Israel er besat<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

En ny unders\u00f8gelse fra det skotske Glasgow Universitet om mediernes p\u00e5virkning af befolkningen i England i deres syn p\u00e5 forholdene i Mellem\u00f8sten viser, at der findes stor forvirring. Is\u00e6r BBC og ITV-stationernes d\u00e6kning af Mellem\u00f8st-stoffet har v\u00e6ret i centrum i unders\u00f8gelsen.<\/p>\n

Blandt andet viser unders\u00f8gelsen, at store dele af befolkningen forveksler <\/p>\n

pal\u00e6stinensere med afghanere. Og utroligt nok tror mange, at israelsk <\/p>\n

territorium er besat af pal\u00e6stinenserne – og ikke omvendt.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

A recent Glasgow University study of Middle East <\/p>\n

coverage by BBC<\/p>\n

and ITV in the United Kingdom found that Britons <\/p>\n

confuse<\/p>\n

Palestinians with Afghans. Incredibly, many <\/p>\n

believe that Israeli<\/p>\n

territory is occupied by Palestinians and not <\/p>\n

vice versa.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

How can that be? Hundreds of hours of coverage <\/p>\n

are devoted to<\/p>\n

the conflict, and yet the British public knows <\/p>\n

little, <\/p>\n

apparently, of the context or history of this <\/p>\n

conflict. Many<\/p>\n

reasons are given for such a finding: that <\/p>\n

Israeli official<\/p>\n

views predominate in the news, that Israeli <\/p>\n

actions are<\/p>\n

contextualised, but not Palestinian actions, <\/p>\n

that Israeli<\/p>\n

casualties are given prominence. Journalists shy <\/p>\n

away from doing<\/p>\n

otherwise because of Jewish pressure and fear of <\/p>\n

being labelled<\/p>\n

Nazis or anti-Semitic. Additionally, with <\/p>\n

America’s so-called war<\/p>\n

on terror dominating and framing the news <\/p>\n

everywhere day in day <\/p>\n

out, all non-state-initiated violence in the <\/p>\n

Middle East is now<\/p>\n

labelled terror and dismissed.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

So here is a little context.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

After decades of conflict, with the Palestinians <\/p>\n

getting the<\/p>\n

worst of it by far, the two sides want peace, <\/p>\n

but because each<\/p>\n

starts from a different premise, there is no <\/p>\n

meeting of the<\/p>\n

minds.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The Israeli premise: we have defeated the <\/p>\n

Palestinians twice<\/p>\n

already, in 1948 when the state of Israel was <\/p>\n

established and<\/p>\n

populated by Jewish emigrants, displacing hoards <\/p>\n

of Palestinians<\/p>\n

who were not allowed to return, and in 1967, <\/p>\n

when we occupied<\/p>\n

the West Bank and Gaza, creating more Palestinian <\/p>\n

refugees and<\/p>\n

taking all of Jerusalem. On our side is the <\/p>\n

reality of power.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Since then, we have consolidated our presence in <\/p>\n

this new<\/p>\n

territory by building 300 colonies (400,000 <\/p>\n

Israeli strong) on<\/p>\n

high Palestinian ground circling Palestinian <\/p>\n

villages and taking<\/p>\n

their foraging lands and most of their water <\/p>\n

(each colonist gets<\/p>\n

1,450 cubic metres of water a year, compared to <\/p>\n

the<\/p>\n

Palestinian’s 83). We patrol these colonies with <\/p>\n

guns, and we<\/p>\n

have built special roads and sometimes tunnels <\/p>\n

for protection.<\/p>\n

Now we are building concrete walls to enclose <\/p>\n

not the colonies,<\/p>\n

but Palestinian-populated areas near them. We’ll <\/p>\n

rope them off<\/p>\n

in little enclaves, changing “the facts on the <\/p>\n

ground”<\/p>\n

irreversibly. Moving the colonists out is <\/p>\n

costly. To move the<\/p>\n

colonists from Gaza, which has proved too hot to <\/p>\n

handle, to the<\/p>\n

West Bank, of course, not back to Israel, is <\/p>\n

going to cost us <\/p>\n

an average of $300,000 in compensation for each <\/p>\n

family, not<\/p>\n

counting other related costs. Thank God for the <\/p>\n

United States.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

We have been particularly successful in altering <\/p>\n

the status of<\/p>\n

Jerusalem, where we have conducted ethnic <\/p>\n

cleansing through<\/p>\n

expropriation of land and properties, <\/p>\n

detentions,<\/p>\n

disproportionate taxation and identity-card <\/p>\n

denials. We make it<\/p>\n

practically impossible for a Palestinian <\/p>\n

Jerusalemite to get a<\/p>\n

building permit, for example, and we keep <\/p>\n

Palestinian<\/p>\n

non-Jerusalemites firmly out of Jerusalem. At <\/p>\n

the same time, we<\/p>\n

facilitate and encourage Jewish colonies, thus <\/p>\n

preempting the <\/p>\n

final-status negotiations<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Now, we are trapping 60,000 Palestinians who live <\/p>\n

in the suburbs<\/p>\n

of East Jerusalem, in Anata, Hizma, Al Za’im, Al <\/p>\n

Ram and Dahiat<\/p>\n

Al Barid, between the wall separating them from <\/p>\n

the West Bank<\/p>\n

and the walls separating them from East and West <\/p>\n

Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

These people, of course, will not be granted <\/p>\n

residency nor will<\/p>\n

they be eligible to get Jerusalem identity <\/p>\n

cards. They will be<\/p>\n

linked to the rest of the West Bank by a narrow <\/p>\n

road or tunnel, <\/p>\n

which will be under Israeli control. This is part <\/p>\n

of our vision<\/p>\n

to ensure Jewish dominance over metropolitan East <\/p>\n

Jerusalem, but<\/p>\n

we call it security.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

After Ariel Sharon’s symbolic visit to the Temple <\/p>\n

Mount in<\/p>\n

September 2000, to demonstrate Israeli control <\/p>\n

of all of<\/p>\n

Jerusalem, East and West, the Palestinians began <\/p>\n

a series of<\/p>\n

street demonstrations. We responded with <\/p>\n

brutality triggering<\/p>\n

what is called the second Intifada or uprising. <\/p>\n

We have<\/p>\n

devastated the Palestinians economically and <\/p>\n

communally through<\/p>\n

“closures” and restriction of movement. That <\/p>\n

means we herd them <\/p>\n

through bottleneck checkpoints and restrict their <\/p>\n

movement and<\/p>\n

the movement of their goods. The World Bank, <\/p>\n

just last week,<\/p>\n

declared what’s happening in the West Bank and <\/p>\n

Gaza as the worst<\/p>\n

recession in modern history. Nearly half of the <\/p>\n

Palestinian<\/p>\n

population is now living in poverty. In contrast, <\/p>\n

we are the<\/p>\n

world’s 16th wealthiest country, richer than <\/p>\n

Ireland or Spain.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

There are a few of them who find all these <\/p>\n

achievements<\/p>\n

intolerable, and so they blow themselves up in <\/p>\n

our midst. Others<\/p>\n

attack military targets. In return, we conduct <\/p>\n

extrajudicial<\/p>\n

executions of Palestinian militia; we regularly <\/p>\n

inflict<\/p>\n

collective punishment on innocent Palestinian <\/p>\n

civilians razing<\/p>\n

their agricultural lands and demolishing their <\/p>\n

houses. We have<\/p>\n

institutionalised discrimination and state <\/p>\n

torture not only of<\/p>\n

Palestinian adults but also of children, who pose <\/p>\n

a danger to<\/p>\n

our soldiers and coloniser families. They throw <\/p>\n

stones at us!<\/p>\n

Since 2000 until June 30, 2004, we have killed <\/p>\n

3,043<\/p>\n

Palestinians, including 584 child killings (up <\/p>\n

to May 31). We<\/p>\n

have maimed or injured 26, 606 of them.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

And still no peace.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

We have a right to Palestinian lands by dint of <\/p>\n

superior force<\/p>\n

and many facts on the ground, and we are fully <\/p>\n

backed by the<\/p>\n

United States, a superpower. We even have <\/p>\n

nuclear capability.<\/p>\n

Why don’t the Palestinians admit defeat? They <\/p>\n

should stop<\/p>\n

resisting, stop wanting revenge, stop trying to <\/p>\n

get their lands<\/p>\n

and human dignity back. Why can’t they <\/p>\n

understand that they have<\/p>\n

lost already?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

What else can one do to subjugate a people? Where <\/p>\n

did we go<\/p>\n

wrong?<\/p>\n

vice versa.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
